My take: yes, let it expire.  But you still need to cover your
butt.  Just cuz you're in the right doesn't mean somebody won't
try to sue you anyway.  I'd try sending certified mail, for
example, so that you have paper evidence that you did as much
as any court judge could reasonably expect of you.
