I've been meaning to ask somebody about Webalizer. My host uses it as the
only tracking tool I've got for my personal site and I think it's just
fine, but I'm a little puzzled by the averages it gives me.
The numbers don't seem to agree with what a spreadsheet will give me for
descriptive statistics. For instance, in the Daily Visits column, I get
these numbers for June:
89
80
55
73
76
38
55
72
107
25
109
63
93
103
71
83
97
58
75
92
107
68
65
43
97
83
70
123
71
73
That adds up to 2314. Divide by 30 = 77.13333. Excel's descriptive
statistics agrees.
Webalizer tells me total visits is 1688 and visits per day is 56. I get
similar results for Kilobytes and I think Files, though I haven't finished
checking thoroughly yet.
That's not a big deal for me, and I know enough about web stats to know the
whole thing is subjective, the best we can do is try to be consistent and
measure trends, and the difference for me is pretty small. The service
being included with my (cheap) hosting package also tends to quiet my
complaints. :-) I wonder how much discrepancy there would be if I was
getting several thousand visits a day instead of less than a hundred, however.
Do any other Webalizer users see this kind of thing with their own stats?
