Apache document root too well hidden

I can't find the website through the command line that I can see through FTP!

It looks like whoever set up this server very carefully buried the live web
files as a security precaution, so carefully that I cannot find it. I was
wondering whether anyone had any suggestions on where I could look for
these blasted files.

- My client has their own web server, Apache version 1.3.6 running on Red
Hat Linux version release 6.0 Kernel 2.2.5-15.
- We have had FTP access for about 6 months, and have been completely
maintaining and updating the site via FTP - no problem.
- I have to compile a small program, and initialize a couple of scripts in
the cgi-bin to complete the redesign of their site.
- Despite having root access to this machine, I cannot find the live
document root where the HTML files, images and cgi-bin are. I have done
"find" from the root, and everywhere, multiple times, for files that I know
are there, even uploading a "find.me" file via FTP and doing a find / -name
for it.
- I have checked the Apache conf files, they all have document root set as
a directory that I can go to, do directory lists, -a etc., but the web
files are not there!
- I have spoken to the ISP that handles both of their DNS servers, and they
have the correct IP address set - the IP address of the web server I am
trying to work on, and there is no redirection in place that their Admin
can find.
- I have spent hours manually digging through directories, looking for
redirects or aliases that might give me a hint.
- I am fairly new to working with Linux through the command line.

I am ready to have Linux and the web server re-installed from scratch, but
first I thought I would ask in this great forum of knowledge and experience :).

Any and all help appreciated.

Cheers
