I would take an approach that combines most of the good advice you have
been given here. Hire a consultant/integrator recommended by someone you
trust to set it up for you and ease your way into it - once it has been set
up properly. Once things are running smoothly, try doing little things
yourself, but not before doing the reading, RTFM, hang out on some quality
mailing lists - oh, yeah, you're doing that already :).
We have some good programmers in-house, but none of them are experienced
sys-admin.s, even though they could code circles around most people. I
wouldn't let them touch the setup of our web servers until they had put in
the time, become aware of the issues, the security holes, the performance
hogs, etc. I have been lurking on this list for over four years, but I am
not a sys-admin. - I just hire them :).
Oh yes, and use *nix :>.
