CC Processing

We would like to upgrade our CC processing with:

1) OnLine research showing purchaser credit card number (or last four 
digits for security - our processor shows only a batch number and 
transaction amount, which is just about useless for balancing at month's 
end if you have mis-recorded an amount).

2) Buy Button/Cart/Integrated system. Plusses/minuses? I don't mind setting 
up a secure server, if it makes sense. If all we're getting is a link to a 
secure order page on a processor's server, it seems unfair to be charged 
$300 for software.

There are a thousand 'Merchant Account Companies' sending us email 
regularly, but it seems like they are all fluff and no substance! All seem 
to charge $50-$75/month plus setup, and getting information out of them as 
to how it would integrate is a real pain. In addition, these prices seem 
astronomical compared to the $9.75 we're paying now for a 'traditional' 
paper statement.

Any recommendations for a small-volume project? I would like to expand our 
product offerrings, but not without real-time processing.
