Hi Mike,
PuTTY is drop dead simple, .. *IF* you get the hang of setting up a 'session'.
1) *Before* you open a connection, cruise the options on the right.
2) Enter your host name (same as for normal telnet [which was a different
port]).
3) Be *sure* to select 'ssh' below the host name.
4) *SAVE* the session using the save button in the lower RH corner.
5) *THEN* use the 'open', .. if putty establishes contact (the way it feels
for me), it will ask you for a user name and then password. If it cannot
contact sshd on the server, it will just close (meaning you have either the
host name or ssh selection wrong).
