Unable to restart Apache httpd after upgrading PHP 4.2.1 using Redhat 6.1

I had my hosting vendor upgrade PHP 4.0.0 to version (4.2.1), but
we had problems with Apache 1.3.26 httpd dying randomly or not restarting
properly.
I had been running Redhat 6.1 with Apache 1.3.26 and PHP version (4.0.0),
without any problems.
I would be interested if anybody else, has got this combination
to work together, with any version of (Redhat 6.x or 7.x), Apache
1.3.26 and PHP (4.2.0 or 4.2.1).
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
