1. Your web server has to be set to keep logs. A line is recorded to 
the log when someone requests a page.

2. You need to run a log reporting or analysis program to tear 
through the log and count the hits. Depends on your platform but 
Analog and WebTrends are popular.

You can also use an external counting service. You place a graphic 
link on your page that causes their server to be hit each time that 
page is served. They count the number of times this happens. If I 
remember correctly, netmechanic.com or websitegarage.com offer this, 
among many others.
