Tables, backgrounds, HTML4, and, of course, style sheets...

Hi.

I'm currently updating my entire hobby site (some 95-100-odd pages) to
comply with HTML4 (transitional). To perform this in an orderly manner, I
decided to make a template page, on which to base all other pages in the
site. With this in mind, I've hit a snag.

HTML3.2 allowed the use of backgrounds within table cells (the <TD>
element). This is, as far as I can tell, now depreciated. In it's place, we
have CSS.

So. How the heck do I get certain TD elements within a table to have a
background image? I've tried classes, but to no avail.

The development page for the site is at
http://web.ukonline.co.uk/roger.stenning/development.html. It's still not
right, and has NOT been validated, since it still has errors on it. The
style sheet is embedded within the page.

Anyone able to tell me, please? Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Roger Stenning
