css woes

exuse my ascii art but I am trying to do something
with css I once did with tables, basically this...

---------------------------------------
| text  |  more text here              |
|       |  that will wrap              |
|       |  and allow the left col      |
|       |  to expand with it.          |
----------------------------------------

with tables this was easy
<table><tr><td width="75">text</td><td>more texthere that....</td></tr><table>

but with css I get mixed results

<div><div style="width:75px; float:left;"> text </div> more text here ...</div>

this  does not let the left col expand with it

any suggestions?
