In IE, 100% width sometimes = wider than browser?

Hi. I'm using IE 5.5 on Win NT 4 (really!).

I made this page
(http://signalanalytics.com/info/images/index_new.php). I generated a
table of images. I used a style to make the table 100% wide (but I get
the same results if I just set the table tag to width="100%").

The problem is that in IE 5.5, this table extends off the right side of
the window! It's bizarre: two other tables on the page have 100% width
(the red boxes). They are only as wide as the window.

I put the PHP code here so you can see it:
http://signalanalytics.com/info/images/index_new.txt
I edited it slightly, of course, removing my username & password.

I solved this problem by placing the generated table inside another
table. (I allowed the top red box's table to contain the image table.)

However, does anyone know the source of my original problem? I mean,
besides that I'm using tables. I was *trying* to get this out of the
way quickly, so I skipped exploring CSS for this. Also, I wanted it to
work to an extent in NN 4.79.

Thanks,
complex
