I apologize for not making it clear in my posting that useit.com IS Nielson's
site, and you can read his articles and purchase his book there.
His website is a scream, in a way. He admits to having no pretensions to
graphic design skills, and recommends that folks hire a professional designer
as well as a usability expert to design commercial sites. But his lack of
artistic talent only showcases what he trying to say: despite the homemade
appearance of his site, it WORKS. It is easy to navigate and to understand.
You get in and out easily.
A second reason for buying his book is that it gives you ammunition for
arguments with your customer about your proposed design. You may need a few
statistics when arguing with customer about why her picture, which does not
hide a link or convey info, should not be positioned on the site's prime
real estate.
And usability requirements do strongly influence design in many ways. It
limits your palette, so to speak, and keeps you focussed.
