"Out-of-the-box" screen rez

When last I was seriously involved in testing Web sites across
browsers/versions/OSs, the Windows OS "out-of-the-box" (whether OEM or
disk) was set to load with a default screen resolution of 640x480
regardless of monitor size. And, of course, for the mass market many
people simply did not change or know how to change the rez to a higher
pixel density - many probably still don't. I would appreciate any feedback
on the current default resolutions for Windows ME, XP and 2000 -
generally. Has it moved to 800x600 or are there different rez defaults
across these OSs? And, lastly, what is the default(s) for the Mac? My
target market is primarily Windows-based, with a few on Mac, therefore
other OSs' specs are irrelevant for my needs.

TIA, Ralph Rasmussen
