Greetings!

Amidst everything else which has been happening for the last few months,
we here at Digital Media Services decided to have a little fun with the
whole Y2K thing. At precisely midnight on 1 January 2000, the main page of
the CWRU Web server reverted to a January 1900 look, which you can see here:

     http://www.cwru.edu/y2k-home.html

Take your time to appreciate the details. Some of them are subtle-- and
would you believe that, in order to pull off the joke, I had to
deliberately introduce two Y2K bugs into the page?
As a historical note, the "CWRU Views" images seen on the Y2K page are
scans of authentic turn-of-the-century pictures of the area around what is
now the CWRU campus, and of students who attended the colleges which
eventually become CWRU. You can see all the images here:

     http://www.cwru.edu/pix/y2k/pixdex.html

Many of the pictures are interesting even if you don't know anything about
the CWRU campus.
I'd hoped to be able to share this with people before we were forced to
go back to the 'real' home page. Sadly, we were ordered to restore the
ordinary home page less than 30 hours after the turning of the New Year.
It isn't as funny now that it isn't the actual university home page, but at
least you can indirectly enjoy the work we put into the joke.

(P.S. Speaking of enjoying the joke, we received six messages from people
who obviously didn't get it-- some of them complained about the "hideous
new look," while others pointed out that the dates on the page were wrong.
Sad but true.)
