Subject: AOL email revisited

After emailing TJ and clarifying the issue, I thought I'd just summarize
and clarify....

The issue was not that AOL 7 users couldn't RECEIVE plain text (they
can) but that they could not SEND it. Thus an AOL7+ user cannot post
cleanly to a text-only list.

AOL confirmed that yes indeedy, they removed the capability to send
plain text email after version 5. However, you can log into webmail and
everything you send is plain-text. So, theoretically an AOL7 user could
hit the internet through their other ISP or their friendly library
computer and reply to any plain text list emails on the net.... of
course if you only have net access through AOL, you are out of luck.

I gently pointed out to the AOL rep that this actually forces users to
leave the sheltered arms of AOL and seek out alternatives which usually
leads to dumping AOL. AOL seems to be betting on the consumers to dumb
down with exposure to the internet rather than up... they might be right
for a certain segment of the population but this strategy will certainly
continue to increase the drain from their consumer base of anyone
willing to get beyond being spoonfed.=20
