strange js/css problem

I have a two-fold problem that may or may not be connected.

1) A javascript function writes hidden menu items which are later
individually toggled to visible/hidden by mouseover events. All is fine in
IE 5+, Opera 5+. But in NN4, the first 'hidden' item always appears when the
page loads and remains there unaffected by any mouseovering. It does not
follow the CSS assigned it. The links work. All subsequent menu items
perform properly including correct CSS rendering.

2) In NN6, the js works fine, but none of the CSS comes through at all. (It
did in a previous version).

I'm mysterfied.
