I've run into this situation myself. Jay is right. You'll probably be OK if
you don't use any of the drop-downs on the validator page - just put in the
URL and let the validator detect the doctype and the encoding. (If
necessary, use View Source to check the doctype the W3C is using itself and
copy that into your document. You do need to have a doctype.)
