.shtml, and .stm, and the unfortunate .sht <G>, are conventional extensions
for pages that use Server Side Includes to add content to the page. They
need to have an extension different from htm(l) so the web server knows it
has to parse them to replace content, rather than just serving them up. I

(I use SSI on my site to add the footers, hence the very extension you were
asking about.)
