Require login

I have a client that wants a site that requires a login.

I need to set it up where if you visit any page that a login is
required, the user gets a warning that the site requires a login.  

I need to know how to create the cookie with the login info as well as
something on each of the pages that check for the cookie and redirect
the user to a login page.

Does anyone know of a good place I can go that will direct me on how to
do this?
