.gz Files

My web host has recently begun zipping all log files into .gz files. I'm
supposed to be able to decompress them using WinZip - and I can - but they
are unreadable gibberish. I don't know if this happens because of the
compression, or during the download or when they're decompressed.

Has anyone else had this problem? Would a different decompression program
make a difference?
