As someone who had to learn this stuff all on her own (no classes) I don't
think you could go wrong with the Myers book. It's clear and practical and
very complete. (That is, for CSS1. His new book, which covers the newer
code, is just out.) Just for myself, I think the Quick-Start series books
are good, but just for a start. The O'Reilly books give you depth and you're
going to want that eventually.

As a good free introduction, you might like the tutorials on this site:
