Jeeze guys! Why make it so hard on yourself? Download a shareware ICON
program (or buy one; they're not expensive -- my personal choice is Axialis
AX-ICONS at www.axialis.com -- for-purchase and 30-day shareware versions
available) and build yourself a simple little 16x16 16-color icon. Name it
FAVICON.ICO and drop it in your root directory (there's rumours this will
work in subfolders, too, but I've not tried). Then, when someone using a
FAVICON-compatible browser (MSIE 4.x and above so far) saves a bookmark to
your page, it should also save the icon in the cache, and then when the
browser is restarted, the icon appears in the bookmarks next to the link and
next to the URL in the address bar.

Some problems with FAVICON:
1: MSIE 4.x and above are currently the only browsers I'm aware of that can
use this; Netscape and Opera don't use them.
2: If you update/reinstall the browser or flush the cache, the FAVICONs go
as well.
3: While I suspect it's possible, I've had extremely limited success in
high-res (high-color) icons.
4: Also, icons larger than 16x16 do not seem to work.

If I want an icon based on a logo, I usually shrink the logo to 16x16,
sharpen it a bit, reduce the colors to 16 (Windows Default, not optimized or
dithered), then copy it into AX-ICONS.

On my system, I've also saved a number of FAVICONs from assorted sites so I
can at least reconnect the icon in the bookmarks after a system upgrade or
cache flush.

Good luck!
