PHP adding \ in front of apostrophes

OK, the problem is worse than I thought.
I'm entering data in one of those php/mysql things and ALL of the " and '
are being escaped with a \ when you make a call on the database.
Is there some way to prevent this?
Is there a special code I can use to replace quotes, apostrophes, m dashes,
etc????
