You might simply be running out of memory.  In the old days the rule of
thimb was to keep things to less than 500 wide because many folk were using
640 X 480 and it would slice the page or choke on it.

You have a lot of variables here.  Version of O.S.  various versions of
browser, amount of memory, amount of graphic memory, hardware speed etc.
Any one of these could cause a problem.
