there is no attribute code for object in html 3.2 or 4
i think you should be using codebase as below.

   <object codetype=3D"application/java" standby=3D"Please wait while =
the application loads..." codebase=3D"WebCam_Viewer.class" width=3D"352" =
height=3D"308">
    <p>If you can see this text, then your browser apparently can't run =
the necessary Java application.</p>

    </object>

valid xhtml, don't know if the applet will run with it.
