You might see if your host offers directory protection with .htaccess.  What
this will do is allow certain directories to be protected at the server
level and presents a password request.  You can see an example at
http://www.ultramodernpool.com

This will work well if you have few people that will be accessing the area
and you are giving out the passwords.  If you need something to generate
passwords in a "membership" type program, then you might do a search for it
on the web, there are several versions available.
