Nothing wrong with asking "Why?".

My personal answer is that document structure is important because it
describes the document, which can then be presented in whatever format the
reader prefers to use.  Ideally, one document (a master) should service all
delivery methods...and XML is addressing this need.  To work, structure
needs to be independant of display.

You did manage to stimulate some interesting conversation, peter, from which
we all were able to learn...:)
