Thanks Kym, Ben, Andrew and R. Michael. Your combined wisdom did the trick.
The problem started when I reinstalled Illustrator, thus re-enabling Adobe's
default settings which I had somehow intuitively reorganized when I did the
initial install. However, since I didn't really know what I was doing (and
still don't totally understand) I was not able to duplicate these settings
the second time around.

The problem is indeed related to saving as baseline standard, optimized or
progressive. After playing with these setting a bit, I was finally able to
create a .jpg that others (without Illustrator or Photoshop) could open.
Whew!!! You saved my butt. But...

I'm still rather lost in space about all this and know that I must become
much more conversant on the subject. Anybody know of a good tutorial on the
subtle variations of file formats...???
