td width=*  is invalid

true to form, IE does show something rather than giving up (try leaving the
closing </table> off for instance)

judging by what you appear to be trying to do, have a look at

   Liquid Tables
   http://evolt.org/article/LiquidTables/20/2321/evolt.org

this article is two years old but still useful, assuming you are determined
to use tables for layout
