yup

you gotta ask yourself, why do you need them to be fixed size cells?

xhtml strict is not hard, you just have to cut out all the presentation
attributes

width is presentation

start by not using widths on anything but images and see where you end up

if you find your layout "breaking" then re-examine how you perform layout

eventually, you should be doing it without tables
