Dawn,

If the band recorded onto Digital Audio Tape using a DAT recorder, you could
digitize that and create MP3 files.  Sonic foundry, Sound forge is a great
tool for working with audio files.  You might check their website.

If the band has their music recorded to CD's already you will have an easier
time of it.  If not hopefully they used a Digital Tape Recorder that you
could interface to your PC and use the Sonic Foundry software.
