OT - Quick ASP question

Hi gurus!

OK. This has been driving me bananas for months now. 
I taught myself ASP by diving into other people's code
and changing it/fixing it etc.

I am now a fairly proficient ASP coder... but one very
basic principal is really messing me up.  Option
Explicit.  I want to use it.  I put in on my pages,
and always get an error - even when Option Explicit is
the only statement on the page.

'Microsoft VBScript compilation (0x800A0400)
Expected statement'

I've not found anything that addresses this problem. 
What the heck am I doing wrong???
