Here are some examples and experience for you.

In my experience, you can affordably register the second domain name
and have it point to the same webspace. You can then use either domain
name in your email address. Just call your ISP and tell them you want
the second domain name to point to your existing web space. They should
charge you a small, annual fee instead of a full hosting fee, because
you won't be getting any additional server space. You can register the
second domain name first, or you can ask your ISP to register it for
you. (You'll have to look into which is more economical.)

For example, I registered zarathud.org and got my ISP, Patriot.net, to
point that at my pre-existing web space. They charged about $10/year, I
think.

For a better example, my company has three registered domains, which we
obtained at different periods of company development. Each of these
points to the exact same web site: iplab.com, signalanalytics.com,
scanalytics.com. We use scanalytics.com now, because that's our
company name, but it'd be quicker to email us at a shorter name, like
user(at)iplab.com.

hope the additional detail helps,
complex
