finding domain name

Hi all,

This may be a strange request, but I was wondering how I can determine 
whether a domain name is taken via some sort of programmatic method.

I know I can use the manual "whois.net" web site, but I need to do 
something via a web site that determines whether a particular domain name 
is available or not.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
