Linking SSI files to a menu

Hi all,

Been playing around with SSI's and am wondering if the following can be done?

I would like to have a list of links (the usual down the side type) and 
have each of these links call a separate file which would be positioned in 
the center of the page (ie not where the links are).  The effect I want 
would be similar to using frames ie the page remains the same but the 
content in the middle changes with each link clicked.

Can this be done and if so could someone give me some pointers?
