FrontPage conversion

Hi all. I have to convert a FrontPage site (lots of shtm files) to straight 
HTML for the redesign and am not too sure on the best way to do it. I've 
converted individual FP files but this is a bit different. Maybe "straight 
HTML" isn't the right phrasing but I hope you know what I mean.
Any ideas or tips?
I was thinking of developing completely new pages in parallel to the live 
site but (and I'm not sure of the right questions here) how do we get rid 
of the existing site while we do that? Or parts of it even and work by 
iteration, a little at a time.
