Have a look at http://www.author.co.uk/write/ - the pages about Copyright: 
a brief look and Permissions may help.

Quotes of up to 40 lines are generally considered acceptable, provided the 
original author and/or copyright owner are given acknowledgement.

That said, lawyers love the chance to exploit the rest of us so take quotes 
from a standard book of quotations - that should save most problems.
