I just read an article today about Google's positioning methods. Google uses something called a 'Page Rank System' which among other things places sites higher that have many other sites linking to them. In fact, according to the article, your site will not even show up in a Google search unless it is linked to by other sites. Google allows submissions but does not encourage them preferring to let their spider find it on its own. So that's just one engine; they all have slightly different methods.
