Hello, Techniques Members: ;-)

FYI....

Web Development Seminar Open To The Public

On Saturday, Oct. 20, the St. Louis Web Developers
Organization is offering an all-day seminar for Web
developers in the St. Louis area featuring sessions by
leading experts in the field. The theme of the seminar
is "Web Development: Past, Present, and Future." The
keynote speech will be given by Jared Spool, founding
principal of User Interface Engineering, a leading
research company specializing in usability and web
design issues.

After an included box lunch, attendees will choose two
of six different breakout sessions to attend. The
breakout sessions include:

* Developing Intranets (Bill Miller) =97 This session
explains how to create high-value intranets that can
help corporate employees improve their efficiency and
effectiveness.

* XML - The Solution To Bridging Software Divides?
(Mark Volkmann) =97 This talk will focus on the use of
XML to allow software to communicate across hardware,
programming language and distributed architecture
divides.

* Technical Aspects of Usability (Jeff Lash) =97 How
"non-usability" people can improve the user experience
through scripting techniques and server settings.

* Tools for Managing a Web Site (Lee Lammert) =97 Active
(log file analysis, file rotation, cleanup),
development (FTP, secure FTP, shells, SSH, validators,
troubleshooting), and diagnostic (DNS tools, TCP/IP
tools, nslookup, dig, whois, top, ps) Web server
management tools and utilities will be discussed.

* Choosing a Web Hosting Provider (Jeff Barczewski) =97
This meeting will explore should you host your own
site or have someone else do it for you? What's
important when looking for a provider?

* Hands-On Rapid Interface Design (Joe Grant) =97 This
session introduces the practice of quickly generating
a user interface design, getting feedback and changing
it.

The day will end with a panel discussion on the future
of Web development. The panel will include Richard
Brinegar, executive director of the International
Webmasters Association, and several of the day's
earlier speakers.

The seminar will be held on the Principia school
campus, 13201 Clayton Road, in Town and Country.
(Principia hosted the first meeting of the Web
Developers group in December 1996. The group has
continued to meet monthly since that time, and now
meets on the third Tuesday of each month in the lobby
auditorium at One City Place in Creve Coeur.)

Registration for the seminar is taking place on the
Web at http://www.stlwebdev.org/seminar. The cost is
just $10 per person, including lunch. (Members of the
HTML Writers Guild pay $5 each. See the Web site for
details.) Payment should be mailed in prior to the
seminar. The address for checks to be sent to is
given in a confirming e-mail message sent to
registrants.

The St. Louis Web Developers Organization is also the
local chapter of the International Webmasters
Association (IWA). IWA has more than 24,000
individual members in 106 countries and has more than
100 local chapters. The group promotes standards and
offers Certified Web Professional (CWP) programs. IWA
recently merged with the HTML Writers Guild,
consisting of more than 123,000 members in 150
nations.
