They get the original domain list from internic.org.  The whois info 
for each site has an expiration date.  A data base sorts the list by 
expiration date then tries the URL one day later.  If it fails they 
add the name to the expired list.  If it doesn't it goes to whois and 
retrieves the current expiration date.
