One for search engine programmers.

I am attempting to develop my own search routine for perl.  I would like to 
know how the behind the scenes program works on typical search engines when 
the number of results is greater than what is displayed.  For example I know 
that they provide a link to the extended results, but what I want to know is 
what does that link point to.  Does it point to a saved file on their server, 
do they place it in the html as a hidden field, etc.  Any insight to this 
would be of great help.  Thanks.
