Mysterious spaces

I've been getting a very weird problem with spaces mysteriously appearing
in HTML file after upload to the server.
e.g <img width="23"... might show up as <img width="2  3"

with absolutely scary results (ie squashed images) as you can imagine

Any ideas anyone???
