Image Loading (or Pre-Loading)

Ok, here's a general image technique kinda question. I have a site that is
a "slide-show" type of deal that works fine on the campus network but the
photos take too long to download for the automated slide show thingiemabob.
SO, I want to preload the images, so they're already in the cache when the
slide show goes to ask for them. What would be the best way to do this? My
first thought was to load them in a row on the first page, set to a 10x2
size "sort of" simulating a task bar. I've also heard though that
Javascript should be used for this sort of thing.

Any ideas, personally used techniques, comments or anything else?
