This is how the business world works. There really isn't any reason
why a site like msnbc.com would care how the page displays in any
browser other than Netscape's or Microsoft's, and that's evident by
their code. Like I said, they're way too popular to care about 1%, or
maybe even less, of their visits.

No, not really. If a browser supports <tag>, it'll render it whether the
doctype says it's OK or not. If a browser doesn't support <tag>, it won't
render it whether the doctype supports it or not. There's no such thing
as omitting a DTD statement (doctype). It and the title element are
totally required tags to make an HTML document. Only. Everything
else, including the HTML and HEAD tags, is optional.

>(not just the big 2 i mean), then why not? How many of us use img name=

Not at all. And I'm personally not against any additional elements or attributes
you might want to add to your site that you definitly know the browser won't
screw up when it isn't supported.

Thing is with validation that it catches all your errors. Way too often do we
have a poster saying they'e web site doesn't display right and wondering why,
when when you take a look at their code, it's really messy and impossible
to tell which error causes the problem. If you start out with clean code, and
validate, then the next time you change something and it doesn't work, it'll
be MUCH easier for you to find your problem.
