Hi all-

As I sat around yesterday, I was thinking about the
classic problem of web developers not taking advantage of
all the latest browser's features because not many people
are using them, but people will not get these browsers
because not enough sites take advantage of the features
that make it special. Ok, i know we all knew that.

Before yesterday, I was of the camp that prefered to build
sites for the lower end, prefering a larger potential
audience than doing really creative (ok, the creativity is
debatable in either case) and using the lastest and
greatest. I think there are still places for these sites,
and they should probably be in the majority, for ever.

But I also see that sites that demand users upgrade their
browsers to take advantage of their sites are actually
doing a service to the web community. (Here comes the
point of this longwinded letter, hold on.)

Without these sites, with their little buttons saying
"This site is best viewed/needs NN4/IE4" the rate at which
people upgrade their browsers would slow down
tremendously. There would still techies, etc. who would
upgrade as soon as possible, but the majority of users
would not see any advantages to upgrading, because
everything they want to do is accomodated by their current
browser.

A change in viewpoint for me, how about for you?
