You can certainly do what you're saying, but then you lose control
over the rest of the table. For instance, suppose you have two
columns, with content on the left and navigation on the right. At one
resolution you see:

| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
===============================================
But at another resolution, you may see:
=================================
| | |
| | |
| | |
=================================
And this may look too jumbled.
