Design Theory open space

I have lately been dabbling with open space, or I think some refer to it as
white space, in the page. I find the effect refreshing. The major sites,
netscape, microsoft, amazon, ICQ etc, pack their front page with the all
important "content".  These pages are unsightly, yet extremely successful.
I just wonder if design was given a little more thought, these sites could
be not only high traffic and successful but aesthetically intriguing as well.
