Interesting question!!

I've seen several articles that state that you shouldn't have anymore than
1 screen-ful of information, because many users don't know how to scroll.

In my experience (and I've observed a LOT of new users) they don't!!  The
don't have the patience, or the experience, to realise there is more to the
page.

And judging what constitutes "one screenful" of information is impossible
given the varying screen sizes and resolutions.

OTOH, I saw a suggestion recently which made sense to me!  Never have more
than 1 foolscap page of info on the one page!

Depends on your audience I guess :)
