Contrary to what some may believe, web design isn't simply a
dark art that can't be analyzed; you can actually do some pretty
detailed studies on what users like and don't like -- for
example, with link colors.

Here's some surveys you might not have looked at recently:

Web design (or _any_ kind of design) isn't simply guesswork;
there some thing that are known to work well, and others that are
simply not so good.  It's not an exact science, but that doesn't
mean that we can't learn from studies such as this.
