Susan,

I've been using XML Spy as an authoring tool (www.xmlspy.com) for about 8
months (both versions 3.0 and now 3.5). I have also tried eXcelon Stylus
2.0 (www.exceloncorp.com) but I couldn't get the hang of it quick enough and
switched back to XML Spy. However the company I work for SilverStream
Software (www.silverstream.com) has just told us that they are standardizing
on eXcelon Stylus, so I guess I'll get a chance to look at it again. There
are also an awful lot of good free XML authoring tools available on the
Internet which vary in how powerful they are (but then again they are free
so you get what you pay for). :-)

Xalan is an XSLT stylesheet processor available free from www.apache.org
specifically http://xml.apache.org/. Using Xalan along with Xerces an XML
parser also available free from apache.org, you can run your XSL / XSLT
programs against your XML data to transform it into HTML, plain text, or
another XML file that is formatted differently. This can be done by running
Xalan from the Windows command line as a Java program, through a batch file,
or even through XML Spy. That is one of the things I like about XML Spy
over Stylus is that I can use an external processor OR Microsoft's MSXML
processor. Stylus only uses MSXML.

Future "Trivial Pursuit" answer (Geek edition of course):
- Xalan (named after a rare musical instrument)
- Xerces (named after the Xerces Blue butterfly)

You're right - lots of activity on the basics list - and I think you're the
first voice in the wilderness on this list for awhile.

I'm just starting to learn XML. Do you use any xml authoring tools? or is
that what Xalan is??

I was just wondering...Is anyone subscribed to this list besides me?

I get lots of e-mails from the other hwg.org lists, but have never gotten
one from the XML group.

I'm currently working XML and XSLT to produce HTML through Xalan. Anyone
else doing something similar?

Mark
